Press Conference: Multiple Homicides

On Sunday, January 10, 2016, at approximately 9:36 a.m., Dallas police officers received a call about a male lying in a ditch at 3606 Kolloch Drive. The victim, Mr. Charles McBride, Black male 01/09/1950, was found to be deceased from gunshot wounds. The victim’s vehicle, a white 2002 Cadillac CTS with Texas license plate DSW-7269, is missing.  Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death and are requesting the public’s help with any information regarding the murder of Mr. McBride.

Approximately 13 hours later, around 10:45 p.m., officers received a report at the intersection of Kirnwood Drive and Hampton Road regarding a male sitting inside his vehicle who appeared to be unresponsive. The victim, Reginald Dwayne Chambers, Black male 01/06/1972, was found inside his vehicle with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Dallas Fire Rescue transported Mr. Chambers to Charlton Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Homicide Detectives are likewise requesting the public’s help with any information regarding the murder of Mr. Chambers.

On January 11, 2016 at about 1:00 a.m., Dallas police received a 9-1-1 call regarding a man lying in the street in the 1700 block of Ridgedorf Drive.  The caller described hearing a gunshot and then dogs barking. When the caller looked outside he saw the victim.  When officers arrived, they found an unidentified Latin male in critical condition suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Dallas Fire Rescue transported him to Baylor hospital, where he later died as a result of his injuries. This investigation is on-going. Detectives are working to identify the victim and suspect in this case. 

None of the three murders appear to be related.  We hope that anyone who has information regarding any of these offenses will call Dallas police detectives at 214-671-3584.   We appreciate the families and public’s patience as we work to solve the murders of these individuals.



Double Homicide on MD Love Freeway

On January 12, 2016, officers responded to an emergency call at 7272 Marvin D. Love Freeway, the Surrey Row Apartments. When officers arrived, they discovered two Black males deceased in the apartment. Both victims died from gunshot wounds.  The deceased have been identified as Alexander Friday Udom B/M/27 and Todd Anthony Moore B/M/24. A Capital Murder offense will be made on 9121-2016. Next of Kin has been made.

On January 17, 2016, at 7:30 a.m., Mr. Dana Hunter B/M/11-27-65, was discovered deceased from homicidal violence in the 1900 block of Hickory Street. Mr. Hunter was found near a homeless encampment where he slept.

Murder Investigation at 9944 Walnut Street

On Jan 13, 2016 , Dallas police and Dallas Fire Rescue responded to a welfare check at 9944 Walnut St #1026 in which the victim Georgia Scruggs was found deceased. There were no witnesses at the location when officers responded. Detectives learned that the victim shared the apartment with her nephew; Ernest William Scruggs Jr. W/M/DOB 11-8-1986  Detectives later discovered that the nephew was also a suspect in an arson case where he attempted to set fire to the victim’s apartment. Ernest Scruggs was apprehended in Garland on an Arson warrant. He was transported to The Dallas Police Homicide Unit where he gave a voluntary statement detailing his involvement in the murder of the victim Georgia Scruggs.  Arrestee Ernest Scruggs is in the Dallas County Jail charged with Capital Murder and Arson on $1,000,000 bond.

Updated Thursday, January 14, 2016 at 11 am:

The homicide victim at 9944 Walnut Street has been identified as Georgia Scruggs W/F 11/28/57.  Coworkers became concerned for her well-being after she did not show up for work and went to check on her. The investigation is ongoing.

On January 13, 2016, at approximately 12:15 p.m., Dallas Police Officers responded to a 911 call for a health and welfare check  at 9944 Walnut Street at the Walnut Bend Apartments. Upon the officers arrival, they found the victim, described a White female in her 50’s, deceased from homicidal violence. The Department is withholding the victim’s identity until the next of kin has been notified.

Public Assistance Needed: Homicide at 9230 Skillman Street

On Friday, February 12, 2016, at approximately 11:46 p.m. at 9230 Skillman Street, the suspect pictured in the video got into the car (parked at the gas pumps in the center of the frame) belonging to the victim, Mr. DeAngelo Golphin B/M 28.  When Mr. Golphin got in the car, the suspect shot and killed him.  The suspect can then be seen fleeing from Mr. Golphin’s car on foot.  

Dallas Police homicide detectives are releasing this surveillance video footage and requesting the public’s assistance in identifying the murder suspect shown in the video.  The suspect is a black male, approximately 20-23 years old, 5’6” – 5’8” tall, with a curly afro that is shaved on the sides.

On Thursday, February 11, 2015, at approximately 8:17 p.m., Dallas Police Officers responded to a shooting call at the intersection of Ann Arbor Avenue and S. Marsalis Avenue. Upon Officers arrival, they observed the victim, Justin Manning Black Male 28, with multiple gunshot wounds. Mr. Manning was transported to Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

On Friday, February 12, 2016, at approximately 11: 46 p.m., Dallas Police Officers responded to a shooting at 9230 Skillman Street. The victim, DeAngelo Golphin Black male 28, parked his vehicle at the gas pumps and entered the store.  While Mr. Golphin was in the store, a Black Male suspect entered his vehicle. Mr. Golphin exited the store and returned to his vehicle. After Mr. Golphin got back inside his vehicle, the suspect shot him multiple times. The victim was transported to Presbyterian Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Capital Murder – 17470 Marsh Lane

On Saturday, February 27, 2016, at approximately 6:45 p.m., Dallas Police Officers responded to a shooting call at 17470 Marsh Lane. The victims, Alfonso Perez-Suruy L/M 28 and Luis De Leon L/M 34 had just gotten off work at a nearby car wash and were walking eastbound on Marsh Lane behind the shopping center, when they were approached from behind by 2 black males, one who was armed with a handgun.  The suspects demanded property from the victims at gunpoint.  The suspect with the gun took property from Mr. De Leon while the other suspect attempted to take property from Mr. Perez-Surry.  When Mr. Prerz-Suruy attempted to protect his property, the suspect holding the gun turned it  on Mr. Perez-Suruy and shot him. Mr. Perez-Suruy was transported to Presbyterian Hospital where he was later  pronounced deceased.

Murder – 3107 Utah Avenue

On Friday, February 26, 2016 at approximately 10:55 a.m., Dallas Police received a Missing Person call at 3107 Utah Avenue, regarding Kydell Hoye B/M 22, who had not been seen or heard from in two days. A Want to Locate Report was completed over the phone on case number 046692-2016.

Later on Friday, February 26, 2016, at approximately 4:21 p.m., Dallas Police Officers responded to a call at 3107 Utah Ave. Upon Officers arrival, they observed the victim, Mr. Hoye, with multiple gunshot wounds deceased on the side of his residence at 3107 Utah Avenue.

Unidentified Human Remains Found

On March 6 at about 11:50AM Officers responded to a call about human remains being found under the bridge in the 2900 Block of Dowdy Ferry Road in an unincorporated area of Dallas County.  The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office was notified and took custody of the remains. 

The remains were found in the same general area where searches for Marisol Espinosa have been conducted; however, we are unable to confirm whether or not the remains belong to Ms. Espinosa.   This incident will be reported as an unexplained death until the ME makes positive identification and determines cause of death.  We will release additional information as it becomes available and appropriate to do so.

UPDATE – March 8, 2016 @ 6:00 PM:

The Dallas County Medical Examiner has identified the remains found at 2900 Dowdy Ferry Road on Sunday, March 6th as belonging to Marisol Espinosa.

In light of the identification made, the Dallas Police Department has reclassified the investigation into Marisol Espinosa’s disappearance as a homicide investigation.  We still await the determination as to a cause and manner of death from the Medical Examiner.  We will release additional information as it becomes available and appropriate to do so.

Update: January 5, 2016

Below is a timeline of the investigation and its progression:

December 12, 2015 – Espinosa, mother, and kids moved in with ex-boyfriend after their house caught fire 

December 29, 2015 – Youth Ops began investigation as Want to Locate

December 29, 2015 – January 1, 2016 – Interviewed family/friends

January 1, 2016 – Increased to Critical Missing/Endangered Person when vehicle was found 

January 1, 2016 – Present –

  • Crimes Against Persons Division was added to the investigation to interview possible witnesses, gather evidence etc.
  • DPD personnel continued searching various areas with assistance from the Helicopter Unit, K-9, Mounted, and Patrol
  • Youth and Patrol personnel, along with Mark 9 Search & Rescue, and the Mounted Unit searched the creek/storm drain on foot and horseback near the Umphress Recreational Center on Umphress Road., due to close proximity to last seen location and where vehicle was recovered.
  • Helicopter Unit checked area and on-foot personnel searched areas where the helicopter personnel were unable to see.
  • Southeast Patrol personnel and Deployment have been put on Special Assignment to assist. Officer are currently checking vacant lots, verifying locations, etc.

The Dallas Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating endangered missing person, Ms. Marisol Espinosa. Ms. Espinosa was last seen on December 29, 2015 at about 8:00 a.m. leaving her residence in the 7700 block of Aurora Street. On January 1, 2016, Ms. Espinosa’s vehicle was found abandoned behind the apartment complex, Las Lomas Apartments at 6161 Trail Glen Drive. Ms. Espinosa is described as a 34 year old Latin female and is 5’5 and weighs 125 pounds.

Homicide at 1820 Chattanooga Place

Through the course of the investigation Homicide detectives developed probable cause to obtain two additional arrest warrants for the offense of Murder in this case – one for Darrian Dwayne Dallas B/M 30yrs old and Charleston Devon Jackson B/M 33yrs old.

On October 8, 2015, Dallas police officers responded to a shooting call at 1820 Chattanooga Place. Upon arrival, officers observed the victim, Andre Davis, a 24- year-old Black male, deceased from several gunshot wounds.  After further investigation it was determined that the suspect, Kenneth Henderson, a 29- year-old Black male, is responsible for Mr. Davis’ death.

Information Sought for Homicide at 3700 S. Tyler Street

On April 30, 2015, at about 2:50 a.m., Mr. Gary Clark was shot during the commission of a robbery in the 3700 block of South Tyler Street.  Mr. Clark died as a result of his injuries. Capital Murder on Cockrell Hill Road

On March 22, 2016, at approximately 1:30 a.m., Dallas Police officers responded to a shooting call in the 2700 block of S. Cockrell Hill Road.  Upon arrival, officers found two victims shot. One victim was deceased in a vehicle and the other was found lying in the parking lot.  He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. Witness statements led detectives to an apartment that appears to be connected to these murders where illegal narcotics were confiscated. We are still working on identifying the victims and will release the names when they have been positively identified and next of kin notifications have been made.

Detectives are currently following up and working to identify additional witnesses and gather information. Murder Suspect Identified

Alert Citizen Helps Locate Murder Suspect

On March 23, 2016, the Dallas Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for James Hightower, a 36-year-old black male, for the murder of Joshua Harewood, a 27-year-old white male.  Hightower was recognized by an observant citizen at a facility at the Dallas/Desoto border and called police. Desoto police and Dallas police responded. Dallas police arrested Hightower and then transported him to Dallas police headquarters. He is currently in the Dallas County jail on a $200, 000 bond.

The Dallas Police Department would like to thank the citizen and the Desoto Police Department for their assistance in getting this murder suspect in custody without incident.

Original Post Friday, March 25, 2016 at 9:20 a.m.: 

On March 23, 2016, at approximately 2:40 a.m., Dallas police officers responded to a shooting call at 2720 Lewiston Avenue. When patrol officers arrived, they observed a witness performing CPR on the victim, Joshua Harewood, a 27-year-old white male who had been shot.  Dallas Fire Rescue pronounced the victim deceased at the scene. Dallas police Homicide detectives interviewed several witnesses, and determined that James Hightower, a 36-year-old black male was responsible for the murder of Mr. Harewood. As a result, detectives have obtained a warrant for Hightower’s arrest for the charge of Murder.

Homicide on Whitehurst Drive

The second individual killed in this morning’s shooting on Whitehurst Drive has been identified as Julio Gerardo Delarosa L\M 18-years-old.

In the early morning of March 28, 2016, at approximately 12:33 a.m., Dallas Police responded to a shooting call at 9911 Whitehurst Drive. Upon officers’ arrival, they found Derek Jordan, a 19-year-old black male, deceased from gunshot wounds. At 12:34 a.m., Dallas Police were dispatched to a second shooting  call at 9540 Royal Lane regarding a victim who was shot. Dallas Fire Rescue responded to the scene and transported a 19-year-old Latin male victim to Presbyterian Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. This investigation is still ongoing, but it appears that both victims were involved in a drug transaction at 9911 Whitehurst Drive. During the transaction, there was an exchange of gunfire when Jordan and an accomplice attempted to rob the victim and a witness.  The second victim’s identification will be released following a next of kin notification.

Murder on Bernal Drive – Suspect Arrested

On March 29, 2016, at approximately 7:20 p.m., Dallas Police responded to a random gunfire call at 5880 Bernal Drive.  Victim Antoine Hodge B/M/23 was shot and transported to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.

As a result of the investigation, it was determined that Shundale Taylor B/F/24 was responsible for Hodge’s death.  Taylor surrendered to Dallas Police at another location and was transported to the Homicide Unit.  She was read her Miranda warning and waived her rights by agreeing to be interviewed.  Taylor admitted to firing her weapon in the direction of Hodge.

Taylor has been charged with murder and placed in the Dallas County Jail on a $500,000.00 bond.

On February 26, 2015, at 4:30 p.m., Kydell Tremaine Hoye was found murdered at 3100 Utah Avenue.  Detectives are seeking the assistance of the vigilant members of our community to help bring the person(s) responsible to justice. This offense is documented on case number 46868-2016.

Murderer on S. Vernon Avenue Arrested

On  March 31, 2016, at approximately 12:00 a.m.,  Dallas police responded to a shooting call at 3311 S. Vernon Ave. #1204 where David Sanchez L/M 33 had been shot and killed.  A second victim, Louis Serna L/M 31, had also been shot and transported to Methodist Central hospital in critical condition.  

The investigation revealed that Cortez Bowser, a 29-year-old black male, who the victim and witnesses know, came over and was invited in.  While there, Bowser went into the bathroom.  After a short period he exited the bathroom and shot both Mr. Serena and Mr. Sanchez. Bowser fled the scene prior to the officers arrival. 

This afternoon members of the Dallas Police Department’s Southwest Deployment Unit arrested Cortez Bowser in Garland, Tx for an unrelated outstanding felony warrant for domestic violence.  Arrestee Bowser is currently in the Dallas County jail charged with that warrant, Aggravated Assault for shooting Mr. Serna and the murder of Mr. Sanchez on a $150,000 bond.
